Using a Cell Phone While Driving Essay Example for Free
Using a Cell Phone While Driving Essay Have you ever used a cell phone while driving? Is it dangerous or not? Using a cell phone while driving is common, but widely considered dangerous. We canââ¬â¢t imagine our life without using a cell phone. It is a part of our daily activities. We use a cell phone to make calls, E-mails, text massages, surf the Internet, to listen musicââ¬â¢s and many other daily activities. Many of these activities take place while a person is driving. So, it is not only becoming a part of our daily activities, but also putting our life at risk. In my point of view, using a cell phone while driving increases the risk of accident. Using a cell phone while driving distracts our mind. Distraction is an important risk factor of traffic injuries. Suppose, you are holding your phone on your ear, listening to the conversation, and managing your car all at once. Youre not paying attention; you could miss a turn or not see something coming out into the road. This can be incredibly dangerous. Using a cell phone while driving distracts your mind obviously. It can cause your eyes off the road, hands off the steering wheel and mind off the sudden situation that can lead a dangerous accident and consequent may be sport death. Moreover, if you are speaking on cell phone being on the road you can not notice all traffic signals, may reach too close to other vehicle and find it very hard to keep a regular speed. Thatââ¬â¢s why you must remove your cell phone from steering wheel and have to keep your eyes on the road. So, calling, talking or reading a message on cell phone while driving distract your mind that can lead an accident. Using a cell phone while driving decrease performance level of the driver, no matter how excellent you are at driving. Driving is a skill that requires full attention of mind to safely control the vehicle. A cell phone conversation reduces that skills and you may forget lane keeping and changing, traffic rules, signals and cannot control the speed of your vehicle. One of my friend said that, he was almost killed on his motorcycle while trying to avoid being hit by reckless driver who was engaged on cell phone. So, talking on a cellphone while driving reduces theà competency level of control the vehicle as well as increases the probability of accident. Moreover, if you texting message while driving, you require a lot of focus on writing because you are constructing sentences. Often while texting, your eyes will leave the road. This is very dangerous, as a result you can hit a pedestrian, another vehicle and other hazard in the road. Engaging on a cell phone while driving is very risky task. A cell phone can distract your mind and reduce your driving skills. It will grab your attention and can easily lead to an accident. There is no doubt, using a cell phone while driving put your life at risk as well as other.

Cheaper by the Dozen :: essays papers
Cheaper by the Dozen The book Cheaper by the Dozen written by Frank B. Gilbreth, Jr. and Ernestine Gilbreth Carey was the life story of the Gilbreth family before Mr. Gilbreth died. Frank Gilbreth, Jr. and Ernestine Gilbreth were two of the twelve children. Mr. and Mrs. Gilbreth, both industrial engineers, ran a firm, Gilbreth, Inc. which was employed as "efficiency experts" by major industrial plants in the United States, Britain, and Germany. Mr. and Mrs. Gilbreth had twelve children, six girls and six boys. The names of the children are Anne, Ernestine, Frank, Bill, Lillian, Martha, Jack, Jane, Fred, Mart, Bob, and Dan. The older children's job is to take care of the youngest and the mother took care of the intermediate children and babies. Nothing was consider more a sin than wasting time, that is why the father, Frank, times himself trying to go as fast as he can with almost everything. He timed himself buttoning his shirt to see which way is faster, top-bottom or bottom-top. He timed himself shaving to see which way took longer, using two brushes to apply the shaving cream of one. He found that two were faster. Frank, the father also experiment on which ways was faster, using two razors of one. He found that one was faster, because with two he cut himself so many times it took him twice as much time to cover the cuts up. The book talked about how smart Frank, the Father was. He painted mores code on the walls of their summerhouse to teach it to his children. When the children decoded the message written on the wall, it revealed a clue that tells the child who decoded it where a prize was hidden. He painted also all of the planets and stars you can see in the sky on the walls of their summerhouse to teach his kids astrology. A neat power that the father, Frank, had was that as soon as he look at a person he would know their nationality. When ever the family would go somewhere were you would have to pay by the person, such as a toll bridge, Frank, the father, would take one look at the person and know that their nationality was Irish. The father, Frank, would say, "do my Irishmen come cheaper by the dozen?" The owner would probably say, "Irishmen? If you are Irish, you should not pay a toll on my road. Your trip is on the house." At the end of the book the father, Frank is called for work in

Nursing Home Facility versus a General Acute Care Hospital
A nursing home facility also known as a rest home can be defined as a place of residence for people who need constant nursing care. A nursing home offers a range of services in addition to skilled nursing and custodial care. These services include a room all meals, social activities, personal care, 24 hour nursing supervision and access to medical services. On the other hand a general acute care hospital is a health facility or institution which offers emergency medical, surgical and intensive care together with maternity services for admitted patients as well out patients. This care is given around the clock with the presence of a registered nursing staff and daily visits of the physician (Morton, P. Hudak, C. & Gallo B. (1998). Most nursing homes provide two basic types of services which include skilled medical care and custodial care. Skilled Medicare services are offered by trained professionals and can be required for a limited period of time in case of an injury or illness. Consequently, skilled care may be needed on a long term basis if a resident/ patient requires injections or other treatments which are long term. This skilled medical care involves physical therapy where the resident is helped to walk or get on or out of bed and even toileting. In case the patients or residents have wounds the nurse is supposed to assist in wound care which involves dressing and administration of antibiotics and monitoring on intravenous fluids. Custodial or personal care includes assistance in dressing, bathing, eating, walking and even toileting. Custodial care is required since people recovering may temporarily need assistance before they are able to work for themselves. Skilled and custodial care in a nursing home facility is given by a licensed and registered nurse who is supposed to be on duty all day long. The care is given until the patients are able to return to their homes and take care of themselves without much assistance or when the facility feels that there could be no further improvements on the individual patient. Some nursing homes do not have facilities that are certified for Medicare for example beds therefore; this facility is more of a residential home since it provides a room, meals and other necessary requirements for daily living and recreation. The patients here are treated more like a family since the nurses are able to cater more to their specific needs whether emotional or medical (Weiss Man.et al, 2001) While receiving skilled or rehabilitation, the nursing home will provide custodial care together with professional services, however the Medicaid paid does not cover all the cost of care and this means that the resident must cater for the other costs. A physician attends residents in a nursing home occasionally when need arises. Whereas in a General Acute Care Hospital, nursing, care is oriented and motivated by urgency. Diagnostic and therapeutic modalities are readily available and therefore immediate medical care decisions are necessary. Like in a nursing home, nursing care here is given by a registered nurse who is present all around the clock. In this facility medical care is instituted on admission and there are daily visits of the physician Like in the nursing home, skilled care is given to the patients together with custodial care until patients have recovered or when they are referred to a nursing for fur ther monitoring and care by a physician. Nursing services are highly specialized due to a high rate of admissions and emergency. A high percentage of professional staff in the nursing department may also contribute to the specialization (Green gold NL.2004). This kind of facility attends to acute cases which may not be taken care of at home or a nursing home. Equally all the facilities are certified and patients are attended at individual level. Conclusion There are significant differences on the care of patients in a Nursing Home Facility and in a General Acute Care Hospital. These differences are so pronounced and are not necessary since both of the two facilities are health care facilities and all the residentsââ¬â¢ medical care on a daily basis. The main objective of a health care facility is the provision of quality services. References: Green gold NL. When can we change an established medical practice? AHA News: 2004:40:6 Morton, P. Aluminum Bats vs. Wooden Bats Essay - 1749 Words
Aluminum Bats vs. Wooden Bats Is baseball Americaââ¬â¢s pastime? For the major leaguers maybe, but for college athletes it seems more like a new age video game. The introduction of high dollared aluminum bats produce football like scores, higher statistics, and a percentage of danger to each and every player on the field. The NCAA has changed the regulations of the bats so far and should look further into to making another change to wooden bats. High tech aluminum baseball bats arenââ¬â¢t quite as new to the game as many people may think. Author, Patrick Hruby, wrote in Sports Illustrated, ââ¬Å"introduced in the mid-1970ââ¬â¢sâ⬠¦ metal bats have become increasingly potent, forged with alloysâ⬠¦ pressurized air chambersâ⬠(Hruby 42). If you asked players who only played with wooden bats, like the legendary Babe Ruth, Mickey Mantle, or even Willie Keeler they would all say that these aluminum bats are taking away from the real game of baseball. These Hall of Fame players arenââ¬â¢t the only ones thinking that it takes away from the game, Bill Thurston, Amherst Collegeââ¬â¢s baseball coach said ââ¬Å"All you have to do is talk to pro scout,â⬠¦They think the college game is ridiculousâ⬠(Hruby 42). Issues in Teaching Writing - 1351 Words
Writing proves daily to be a tool one can use in their own way to express themselves. Many teachers have their own approaches to teaching writing and not to say that they are not effective I just feel that if some people change their approach some of the problems I myself see can be changed by a change in the approach to teaching and assessing writing. Some issues I see are students not being exposed to different styles of writing, their writing assignments challenge their knowledge and remembrance instead of their analytical and critical thinking skills, and the way teachers assess writing. These problems are pretty I love writing and I have had good and bad experiences with teachers of writing. I believe one issue in the teaching ofâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Being able to address audiences across cultures, genders, and ages should be a crucial lesson taught. Writing for the audience gives the written work a structure. In many language arts classes language is taught as the stru cture of literature. Language is often taught to students as a system of communication instead of a tool of expression. ââ¬Å"The aim of the growth model, in contrast, was to build on the childââ¬â¢s previous mastery of language, to develop her ability to shape experience into words, to connect disparate events and ideas. What was need to make work in English more pointed and coherent hen, was not a more complete understanding of the structure of literature or linguistics but a better grasp of how students learn to make full and expressive use of language.â⬠(Harris 13) There is a difference and language can act as one or the other given the situation. Language as a system means the combination of many things to form something bigger. The system is almost a mock of the ways things are to be written, again taking away the creative freedom of the student. In writing, language as a system is only the combination of known uses of language. When we use language as a tool it allows the writer to use words to build their own system. With the taught fundamentals the students should be able to write in the formation they compose instead of mimicking the strict boundaries imposed by the instructor. It owned a chain of restaurants and retailing outlets. JPL had on average, 1000 employees including 80 general administration staff. JPL was wholly-owned by the Indian government before 80% of its shareholdings were acquired by the Hong Kong group of companies after 20 years operating. The objective of the takeover was the strategic priority to gain rapid international market share as well as to increase its ability to service an expanded and geographically dispersed customers based in the Middle East and the Indian subcontinent states. The company was structured into four main functional units namely, the Sales and Marketing, Finance and Accounting, Production and Services, and Human Resource Management. Each functional unit headed by a director, and together with the CEO, they formed the executive management team of the company. According to the Chairman, the company has been overwhelmed with problems ever since the takeover. The sales figures are keep declining but the operating costs are up. He suspected that the underlying causes of those problems are from the companyââ¬â¢s credit control and inventories management. The Protagonist Azmi has been determined to be the protagonist in this case. He had been personally chosen by the Chairman of JPL to be the CEO of the company commencing in November 2009. The main task given to him by the Chairman was to plan and execute an appropriate turnaround strategy for the company. To have that to be done, Azmi had been reviewing the companyââ¬â¢s financial statements and also focusing on the companyââ¬â¢s credit control and inventories management. Prior to the reviews, he had found several problems that cause the downturn of the company. The Problems There were a few retail outlets owned by the company were persistently incurring losses, perhaps because of non-strategic locations. This problem worsened the conventional high operating costs that JPL has to face because of the rising of the raw material prices. While reviewing the financial statements, Azmi found out that for the year ended 31 December 2008, the company had incurred a loss of $10. 14 million. This was prior to the excessive spending in advertisement and promotional cost which amounted to $5 million in 2008. Azmi also found out that the companyââ¬â¢s account receivable was poorly manage which cause the debt kept multiplying over the year. There was a significant $40 million total provision made for bad debts in the accounts over a 10 year period. Upon investigation, he discovered that the problem stemmed from wholesale distributors who were defaulting. The company also had been having negative cash flows in 2008 as well as the preceding years. This was due to the mismanagement of inventory and account receivable as well as the poor asset management. There were insufficient bank guarantees given by the dealers and wholesalers for the goods taken on credit up to one month. The companyââ¬â¢s overall account receivable showed an average overdue more than 90 days. The company also accepting the placement of motor vehicles as part of collateral for the goods obtained. Azmi observed that there were a number of empty factories with old steel structures intact for the last 10 years. Azmi found heaps of obsolete spare parts left untouched in the store room while inspected the companyââ¬â¢s assets. Azmi run through the fixed asset motor register and he realised that the most of the vehicles were more than 5 years old and had zero net book values. The Major Issues Most of the problems occurred in JPL were mainly caused by the companyââ¬â¢s poor management control. This is including the debt or credit control management, inventory management, as well as asset management. If there is a deficiency in debt or credit control management, there will be a possibility of slow collection of receivables. The longer an account goes without being collected, the bigger the risk that it will never be collected, which later leads to insufficiency of operating cash for the company. The lack of inventory management shows that inventories move slowly to the customer, increasing storage and obsolescence cost. Because more money is tied up in inventory, the company was cashless and this will increase borrowings, which will increase interest expense. An efficiently run business produces lots of sales for each dollar invested in assets. On the other hand, an inefficient run business will tend to have assets sitting around idle and not generating sales. This was what happens in JPL where there were a number of empty factories with old steel structures intact for the last 10 years, and there were heaps of obsolete spare parts left untouched in the store room. Alternatives Available There are two alternatives available for Azmi to choose on how will he plan and execute an appropriate turnaround strategy for the company. Firstly, Azmi could just plan a strategy that will give an immediate benefit for the company but only for short-term, or secondly, he could plan an appropriate strategy that will consistently improve the companyââ¬â¢s performance for a long-term period. Decision Criteria Since the company is in an industry that facing a lot of pressures such as product pricings, low entry barriers which causes high competitive, and differential consumer preferences, it is the best for Azmi to plan and execute the appropriate strategy that will consistently improve the companyââ¬â¢s performance for a long-term period. This is to ensure the survival and successfulness of the company in this highly competitive industry in the future. Actions and Implementation Plans First and foremost, JPL should include Research and Development (RD) into the main functional units of the company. It is known that it will be very costly to invest to establish a RD department in a company, but it will later serve the company for the future benefits. This was proven by Nestle and Unilever whom dominated the consumer-based market in Asia Pacific region. These two companies invest heavily in RD, advertisement, and promotion. These are the market leaders and they spent in the range of 2-3% of their turnover to improve or at least maintain their market shares. With RD, JPL could do more research on demographic strategy so that the retail outlets can be located on strategic locations as sales can be improved for achieving higher profits. The case shows that the company incurred excessive spending in advertisement and promotional cost which amounted to $5 million in 2008. It is true that to generate more sales, advertising and promotion are essential, yet, $5 million is a big value. Sales and Marketing department should another efficient method and not too costly to advertise and promote products. The trick is to find the right balance between generating sales and controlling the expenses needed to generate those new sales. A company generating tons of sales will go bankrupt if its expense is out of control, and a company that tightly controls its expenses will fail if it does not generate enough sales. Net profit margin takes this trade-off into account, and indicates the companyââ¬â¢s ability to generate sales while controlling expenses. Consecutively, to have good inventory and credit management control, the company should monitor and review their sale and collection record monthly or quarterly in order to make sure the supply of products will not be continued if the customers meet their credit limit. This is to discourage defaulting by customers, particularly in this case, the wholesale distributors. The supply will only be continued when the customers make the payment. By doing monitoring process, the company also can send the reminder to customers at least 2 weeks before actual date of payment. The faster the inventories move to customer and the faster the collection of receivables, the more cash the company will have available. The excess can be invested to earn interest income or reduce borrowing, which reduces interest expense. A number of empty factories with old steel structures intact for the last 10 years, and heaps of obsolete spare parts left untouched in the store room, are either to be utilized or to be liquidized. It is because if the assets are to be kept idle, it shows inefficiency of business. Therefore, if the company is able to operate on full capacity, it is best for utilizing all assets. Otherwise, if the companyââ¬â¢s capacity is lower, the idle assets should be liquidized to avoid unnecessary maintenance costs.
